Janet Scott loves books and learning and is happy living at the schoolhouse where her grandfather is the dominie. When her grandfather dies suddenly, everything changes, and she is sent to work for farmer Wull Foster. Life with no one to protect her is tough. So when philanthropist Josiah Saunders, an old friend of her grandfather's, takes her in, they both relish the companionship. Josiah's avaricious relatives, though, resent his generosity and are furious when he encourages Janet to stay at Crillion Keep, and he is forced to think of a way to thwart their scheming. Janet's love, penniless lawyers' clerk Fingal McLauchlan, is unable to spirit her away, and she faces a dilemma when Josiah offers her marriage and security. 1. Language: English. When Frank Milliken died in his home, his wife Janet and their two children couldn't bear to live among reminders of him. They left their home in California and moved to Pennsylvania to start over in new surroundings. The house they bought, an airy colonial on a quiet street, seemed idyllic. But once they moved in, things started to go wrong. Odd sounds, strange sensations, whispers from the neighbors; the Millikens began to suspect that their ghosts had followed them across the country. When they discovered that their house had a dark history, they went to court to battle the sellers and found themselves entangled in a drawn-out legal battle. At its core, lay an issue more suited to priests than to lawyers: how to define our relationship to the dead. "The Ghosts of Pickering Trail" is an intimate chronicle of the Millikens' harrowing attempt to escape the memories of a home and how we put a price on death and loss. Writers Will Hunt and Matt Wolfe offer a gripping portrait of a family ravaged by grief and driven to the edge by experiences that defy explanation. 1. Language: English. To the Bridge: A True Story of Motherhood and M...

The case was closed, but for journalist Nancy Rommelmann, the mystery remained: What made a mother want to murder her own children? On May 23, 2009, Amanda Stott-Smith drove to the middle of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland, Oregon, and dropped her two children into the Willamette River. Forty minutes later, rescuers found the body of four-year-old Eldon. Miraculously, his seven-year-old sister, Trinity, was saved. As the public cried out for blood, Amanda was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to thirty-five years in prison. Embarking on a seven-year quest for the truth, Rommelmann traced the roots of Amanda’s fury and desperation through thousands of pages of records, withheld documents, meetings with lawyers and convicts, and interviews with friends and family who felt shocked, confused, and emotionally swindled by a woman whose entire life was now defined by an unspeakable crime. At the heart of that crime: a tempestuous marriage, a family on the fast track to self-destruction, and a myriad of secrets and lies as dark and turbulent as the Willamette River. Heaven lays down the law and Hell gets more hellish in Lawyers in Hell, marking the return of Heroes in Hell - the greatest shared universe of all time. The commandments weren't merely suggestions - and there were over 300 of them. And now, as the higher powers send auditors through the underworlds to dispense yet greater injustice, heroes and villains from all of history are about to be reminded that sin doesn't pay...and in Hell, neither does virtue: Satan gives an interview and hands down a terrible judgment. Alexander the Great and Lawrence of Arabia try to get a soldier off the hook. Caesar and Cleopatra seek an out-of-court settlement when Hell's auditors come calling. Leonidas and the 300 face a hot wash in Hades. Che Guevara and Kurt Cobain find out you can't love the bomb. Rasputin tells it like it is, and deeper damnation is the result for Marie Antoinette. Napoleon and Wellington go high tech in order to fight Hell's demons. Harry Houdini finds there's no escape. All this and more peril in perdition await in 22 tales that will make you fear for your immortal soul.... #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND NPR • Featuring one of John Grisham's most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters yet, Rogue Lawyer showcases the master of the legal thriller at his very best. On the right side of the law-sort of-Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. His office is a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, and fine leather chairs. He has no firm, no partners, and only one employee: his heavily armed driver, who also so happens to be his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddie. Sebastian drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. He defends people other lawyers won't go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because Sebastian believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial-even if he has to bend the law to secure one. Praise for Rogue Lawyer "Terrific . . . inventive . . . Grisham still makes it look easy."-Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post "Sebastian Rudd is . . . a kind of twenty-first-century Philip Marlowe . . . with a blunt, rude, gravelly poetic wiseguy voice."-Benjamin Percy, The New York Times Book Review "Deeply engaging and entertaining . . . [Grisham finds] intense drama in the little skirmishes that play out across our legal system every day."-Charles Finch, USA Today "Grisham has taken a step in an intriguing new direction."-Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Dave Barry's History of the Millenium (So Far) ...
9,95 € *

Thucydides, Gibbon, Tuchman, McCullough: to the names of the world's great historians must now be added the name of Dave Barry, who has taken a long, hard look at our new millennium (so far) and, when he stopped hyperventilating, has written it all down, because nobody would believe it otherwise. In November 2000, the skies darken over Florida as hundreds of thousands of lawyers parachute into the state from bombers, while in 2002, the federal budget surplus mysteriously disappears ("Everybody looks high and low for it, but the darned thing is gone!"). In April 2003, no WMD have been found, but investigators do discover three barrels of lard, described by U.S. intelligence analysts as "a heart attack waiting to happen", while in 2004, an already troubled nation receives an even greater blow: the sight of Janet Jackson's exposed nipple. In 2005, Katrina, Cindy, Harriet, Martha, Valerie, Paris, Michael Jackson,(women just got crazy that year) while in November 2006... well, something happened; it'll come back to us. Plus, an extra added bonus: Dave Barry's complete history of the millennium so recently (and unlamentedly) gone: Crusaders! Vikings! Peter Minuit's purchase of Manhattan for $24, plus $167,000 a month in maintenance fees! The invention of pizza by Leonardo da Vinci and of the computer by Charles Babbage (who died in 1871 still waiting to talk to somebody from Technical Support)! Filled with facts and commentary that will amaze your friends and confound your enemies (yes, we mean you, Osama!), this is the book that will finally earn Dave Barry his second Pulitzer Prize. And about darned time, too. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Patrick Frederic. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/peng/000740/bk_peng_000740_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
