Institutional Assessment As An Agent Of Reform

The quality of Nigerian legal education is fast deteriorating and in addition, the current structure of monitoring the training of lawyers is grossly ineffective. This book discusses steps that can be taken in reforming the current structure of Nigerian legal education to revert this trend. The book proposes a system of internal institutional assessment by the law faculties in Nigeria. Financial, social - cultural constraints and political economy interference are obstacles to reforming Nigerian legal education, but institutional assessment can mitigate these obstacles. Using Mariana Prado s concept of institutional bypass as a solution to overcoming these obstacles and also as a means of advancing reforms in the training of lawyers in Nigerian, this book proposes the adoption of institutional assessment as a strategy to create an avenue for stimulating reforms and promoting quality in Nigerian legal education.

Public enforcement has been strengthened in numerous ways - for example, through the introduction of a leniency programme and a substantial increase in fines for competition law violations. At the same time the EU Commission has been promoting private enforcement - for example, by developing a legal framework that grants victims of EU antitrust law infringements access to compensation. The contributions in this book address a range of topics in the area of competition law enforcement, including the role of fines and leniency programmes in public enforcement, access to evidence and the quantification of damages in private enforcement, and the interaction between public and private enforcement of competition law in Europe.

Peace Maintenance in Africa

This book discusses the many legal aspects arising in relation to the maintenance of peace in Africa. Over the past twenty years, the majority of peace operations have been deployed on this continent, most of them established by the UN Security Council, sometimes in cooperation with the African Union and other African regional organizations, with contributions from the European Union and NATO. In some cases, the African Union has invoked its 'primary responsibility for promoting peace, security and stability in Africa', thus questioning the legal partnership between UN and regional organizations provided for in Chapter VIII of the UN Charter. The peace operations deployed in Africa have sometimes received a very robust mandate, which also includes the use of force and the protection of civilians' human rights. The implementation of this broad mandate, which goes well beyond the traditional 'peacekeeping approach', requires considerable human and economic resources. Moreover, it raises several issues of concern with regard to the impact on the economic and political systems of the states in which the operations are deployed and, more generally, on the exercise of sovereignty over their territorial communities by these states. Offering an update for lawyers in practice and in academia interested in the field of international law, the book also contributes to the theoretical studies concerning the activities of international organizations, focusing on one of the most challenging issues to emerge in recent times.

This book offers clear, detailed guidance on all aspects of prognostic evaluation in patients who have been involved in a serious accident with neurological consequences or have been diagnosed with a severe neurological illness. It covers the full range of disorders of the central and the peripheral nervous system, not only providing very accurate prognostic estimates but also addressing relevant clinical issues, differential diagnosis, and the role of imaging. The book is practically oriented and designed for use on a daily basis when assessing prognosis and discussing the outcome with patients, their families, and other interested parties. It will support patient-doctor partnerships by ensuring that the most professional answers can be given to patients' and doctors' questions and by promoting realistic expectations of the effect of medical interventions. In addition, it will enable doctors, lawyers, and other professionals to understand relevant issues when an estimate of prognosis and life expectancy is the subject of legal dispute.
