Tough Crimes: True Cases by Top Canadian Crimin...
9,95 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Tough Crimes is a collection of thoughtful and insightful stories by 20 of Canada's most prominent criminal lawyers. In the book they write about cases that had surprising turns or that presented personal or ethical challenges. We've all heard the media's take on notorious criminals, but when have we had a chance to hear directly from the lawyers who defended or prosecuted them? We've all lamented the fate of a person who we think was wrongfully accused, but who better to explain what happened than his or her counsel, who was there for the client every step of the way? In Tough Crimes, Edward Greenspan writes on a miscarriage of justice; Richard Wolson and Marilyn Sandford on the wrongfully convicted; Earl Levy on the Toronto Shoeshine Boy murder; Peter Martin on a study of evil; John Rosen on defending Paul Bernardo; Fred Ferguson on child abuse; William Smart on a "Mr. Big" sting; Richard Peck on Air India; Noel O'Brien on corpora delicti; Joel Pink on the Antigonish Beech Hill murders; Brian Beresh and Patrick Fagan on reasonable doubt; Mark Brayford on Robert Latimer; Marie Henein on the wrongfully charged; C. D. Evans on weighing moralities; William Trudell on the Walkerton water treatment disaster; forensic psychologist Thomas Dalby on the Taber school shootings; John Vertes on aboriginal justice; and Hersh Wolch on a young prosecutor's trial by fire. 1. Stunning Hollywood Hills heiress Jade Lamont appears to have it all - the brains, the smashing looks, the cool job with the A-list law firm, and the string of hunky boyfriends. Then her father, Cicero, is murdered under mysterious circumstances, her mother commits suicide, and her beloved brother, Richard, vanishes without a trace. Jade is frantic, and she turns to Nick Crane - an old school PI with a huge heart, nerves that bend but do not break, and an intriguing crew of formidable helpers. The trail is hot, and it leads Crane to doctors on the take, crooked big-time lawyers, fake cops, murderous thugs, and Arnold Clipper, man-about-town and a cruel and challenging antagonist. As the body count mounts, Nick must use every ounce of his cunning and courage to find Richard, keep Jade alive, and bring the menacing Clipper to justice. 1. Language: English. The Seven Poor Travelers: A Charles Dickens Chr...

A classic Dickens Christmas story full of love, loss, regret, and reuniting. At listener request an American voice was used to make the audio more accessible to North American listeners. The story begins by relating the hardships the English were enduring at the time of the writing and tells of a dear soul who had endowed an inn for poor travelers to give room and board to destitute visitors for one night. Dickens ironically points out that the travelers got about 1/30th of the value, while the management and lawyers of the trust got the other 29/30ths. After a Christmas Eve feast, the narrator tells a story about Richard Doubledick, saved by an officer friend , who became his friend for life until his death at Waterloo. Richard later met the French officer who killed his friend and used forgiveness to get over it, which lead to them and their children becoming lifelong friends. This is a classic story about generations of salvation and friendship. "The Seven Poor Travelers" is a wonderful introduction to Dickens for students who wish to dabble first before taking on his longer novels. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Deaver Brown.
